There are many options for getting your start in a career in animal care. You can study in a classroom or online, and learn your course in a full-time, part-time or self-paced capacity.

You might be considering a career in animal care, or just want to learn how to better care for the pets in your life. Either way there is a course for you, whether it’s a short course or one you complete online.

Certificate in Animal Care

This course is a great first step to take if you'd like to work with animals. There are no pre-requisites, and the option to study in a classroom or online. It focuses a lot on dogs and cats, which makes it perfect for people who want to understand their pets and how to take care of them best. Areas of study include animal anatomy, optimal animal health, how to prevent and treat common animal diseases, proper handling of animals, and proper animal grooming techniques.

Certificate II in Animal Studies

This qualification is more focused on the animal care industry, with information on how to look after animals in environments like animal shelters, catteries, kennels and pet shops. You’re encouraged to get practical experience with a placement so you can get hands-on knowledge as well. You can do this animal care course at TAFE or at another approved vocational course provider.

Certificate III in Animal Studies

This qualification lets you either focus on a specialisation like Grooming or Companion Animals, or continue to expand your knowledge about animal care. This course includes the core subjects discussed in Certificate II, as well as subjects including animal hygiene, young animal care, reception skills and simple breeding. Again it is recommended that you get work experience in your area of animal care interest.
